How Magnetic Fields Work

Magnetic fields are created by the motion of electric charges, either in the form of an electric current flowing through a conductor or the spin and orbital motion of electrons within atoms. The strength and direction of a magnetic field are described by magnetic field lines, which depict the force and orientation of the field at different points in space.

The strength of a magnetic field is measured in units called tesla (T) or gauss (G). The Earth's magnetic field, for example, has a strength of approximately 0.00005 T (0.5 G) at the surface. Stronger fields can be generated using electromagnets, where an electric current flowing through a coil of wire creates a concentrated magnetic field around the coil.

Magnetic Field Applications

Important Considerations

It is important to note that magnetic fields can interfere with the operation of electronic devices and can pose health risks at high field strengths. Proper shielding and safety protocols are essential when working with strong magnetic fields.
